Middlesex County is governed by a seven-member Board of Chosen Freeholders. The Freeholders are elected at-large to staggered three-year terms in the November general election. In January of each year, the Board reorganizes, selecting one Freeholder to be Freeholder Director and another to be Freeholder Deputy Director. The Freeholder Director appoints Freeholders to serve as Chairpersons and members on the various committees which oversee county departments.

The very first intercollegiate football game was played at Rutgers University on November 6, 1869. Rutgers beat Princeton six goals to four, in a game with a round ball and 25 men to a side. Thomas A. Edison moved his invention laboratory to Menlo Park in 1876. His inventions included the phonograph, automatic telegraph, and incandescent light bulb.

New Brunswick started as a ferry crossing in 1686 in Middlesex county. With having a good sea port and water power from the Raritan River by the 1750s it was a center of commerce for shipping and milling. New Brunswick is also home to Rutgers University.
